Episode 37: Creating a niche in a crowded industry with Emily Roggenburk

Listen Later

Emily Roggenburk is a local photographer here in Cleveland. She’s really taken that locality and made it something that’s a big part of her business. While photography might seem like it’s a really saturated market, I love Emily’s story because she took photography and asked herself, “What aren’t people doing with photography? What can I do with photography? What can I leverage that is unique to me, unique to where I’m living, and unique to certain situations going on in the world?” This is a really cool example of getting creative with your niche and I’m sure this episode will offer you a lot of inspiration for niching down your own business whether you have a geographic focus or not.Topics we cover:— Being a local entrepreneur— Emily’s journey from working in corporate America to becoming a self-employed photographer— The incredible story of how she got into aerial photography (it involves an impromptu helicopter ride!) and honed in on the niche of her business— The process Emily went through to go from feeling confused about branding to getting clear on her why and her brand— How she branched out with her business to encompass other cities— The guiding values that Emily follows both in her personal life and in business— How she has dealt with uncertainty and elements of the unknown when starting her business— Identifying your weaknesses and outsourcing work that is not in your zone of genius— Staying focused in your business when you’re a jack of all trades— Scheduling your time in order to stay on top of things— The differences between our expectations and the reality of self-employment— Taking care of your mental health and your energy levels as an entrepreneur— Don’t forget to go to Audibletrial.com/PinegateRoad and sign up for your free trial
