Episode 373: Critique, Extremism, and Authoritarian Fragility in NSPM-7

Listen Later

Today’s episode strongly critiques the theoretical National Security Presidential Memorandum-7 (NSPM-7) of 2025. The author of the source article, Dr. Jaime Hoerricks, an autistic trans femme, argues that NSPM-7 is an example of authoritarian fragility because it allegedly collapses legitimate critique and dissent—such as anti-capitalism, secularism, and trans existence—into indicators of violence and extremism. Dr. Hoerricks systematically addresses ten points within the memorandum, like “extremism on gender” and “hostility toward ‘traditional’ family,” refuting the notion that these political stances or ways of being constitute a threat. Ultimately, she asserts that the true nature of freedom must include the “dangerous, vital freedom to dissent” and that criminalising critique is a hallmark of a weak, panicking regime, not a confident democracy.
