Addiction: a very serious topic affecting not just people in pharmacy, but EVERYONE in our lives. Whether you have struggled, are struggling, or know someone who has gone through this, addiction has impacted nearly every single person in our community at some level. As healthcare professionals, it is our duty to be a part of the solution to this increasing problem in our country, but very often in that process comes a dichotomy between empathy, and enabling, and how to be supportive in that process for those we care about in our personal or professional lives. I wanted to address these points and more with someone who has made it his life’s work to effectively guide people through this process: my friend and colleague Steve Wize.
Steve Wize is an author, speaker, and corporate wellness trainer who specializes in helping companies and individuals reach their full potential. After graduating with his Master’s degree from Pitt, Steve went on to become a licensed clinical social worker and has spent the past five years working in private practice. During this time, Steve designed his own unique curriculum in which he has used to create his book, and his business, Mental Fitness, LLC.
Steve’s passion to help others struggling with substance abuse is fueled by his own loss growing up of a loved one to a drug overdose. After spending his first two years in the field working as a counselor with people taking methadone, Steve then transitioned into helping those taking suboxone. By utilizing a non-judgmental, solution-focused approach, Steve helps clients to master their mental fitness achieve their full potential.
