Episode 382 How to Turn Air into Rock

Listen Later

Claire Nelson is a geochemist who studies the cycle whereby volcanoes spew CO2, which falls as acidic rain, dissolving rock and carrying minerals to the sea, where the carbon falls to the ocean floor for millions of years until the tectonic process folds it in and a volcano spews it out again. The point of this research is to find ways of speeding up the transfer of excess CO2 from the air to the seabed. She intends to inject it into basalt, where it will stay in solid form a very long time. The use of negative emissions is going to be an essential factor in solving the climate crisis, and this is one promising technology.
