Becoming No Ordinary Woman

Episode 39 Stop letting 'age' be a dream killer

Listen Later

The Story

In this episode, Joanna shares her journey of embracing change and adventure as she prepares to travel indefinitely, starting with the Camino de Santiago. She challenges the notion that age should limit dreams and encourages listeners to pursue their passions regardless of societal expectations. Joanna emphasises the importance of adapting dreams to fit personal circumstances and offers practical steps for listeners to redefine and pursue their aspirations. The episode concludes with a message of curiosity and openness to new beginnings, reminding listeners that their dreams are waiting for them.

Takeaways

  • Many people limit their dreams based on age, but this is often a cultural conditioning.
  • Joanna reflects on her life and how she has never set age as a limitation.
  • Examples of women achieving success later in life inspire others to pursue their dreams.
  • Dreams can be adapted to fit personal circumstances and preferences.
  • Practical steps include separating dreams from timelines and defining what matters about the dream.
  • Borrow evidence from others who have succeeded later in life to combat self-doubt.
  • Taking small actions can keep dreams alive and create momentum.
  • Curiosity and openness to new experiences are essential for pursuing dreams.

Strategy

1. Separate the dream from the timeline.
A dream does not expire just because a number changes. The timeline might shift. The method might evolve. But the desire itself is data. It is there for a reason.

2. Call out the story you are telling yourself about age.
Is it actually your belief? Or is it cultural conditioning?
Who decided 50 means slow down? Who decided 40 means it’s too late? Most of these “rules” are inherited — not chosen.

3. Define what actually matters about the dream.
Like we did with the Camino.
Strip it back to the essence. What is non-negotiable? What is flexible? Often you don’t need to abandon the dream — you need to redesign it.

4. Borrow evidence.
When self-doubt creeps in, look for proof. Women who started later. Women who pivoted. Women who adapted. If someone else has done it differently, it expands what is possible for you.

5. Take one visible step.
Dreams die in delay.
They stay alive in action.
Not the whole plan. Just the next step. Open the tab. Book the call. Buy the guidebook. Start the Instagram page. Momentum creates belief.

Soul – Journal Prompts

  • Where have I quietly put a ceiling on myself because of age?
  • What dream have I labelled “too late” — and is that actually true?
  • If age were irrelevant, what would I allow myself to pursue?
  • What is the essence of the dream? (Freedom? Expression? Impact? Adventure?)
  • How could I redesign this dream so that it works for me now?
  • If I fast-forward 10 years, which would I regret more — trying and adapting… or never starting?

Universal Guidance – Page of Cups

This is the card of curiosity.
Of emotional openness.
Of new beginnings that feel slightly unexpected.

The Page of Cups does not worry about whether she is “too old” to try something new. She follows the nudge. She listens to the whisper. She allows herself to be surprised by life.

This card asks you to approach your dreams with wonder instead of judgement.

It says:
Stay open.
Stay playful.
Stay willing to begin again.

Age is not the energy of the Page of Cups.

Possibility is.
