On this week's episode we speak with Ilana Lipsett, one of the founders of [freespace]. The mission of [freespace] is to foster creativity, community and civic innovation through the gift of free space.
[freespace] is an amazing tactic for temporarily activating a vacant space in a downtown or a commercial corridor. The original activations happened in San Francisco in 2013, but it's since spread to various cities around the world. We're currently working to bring this concept to Toledo this summer, and I'm curious to see how it plays out in a smaller city.
We dig into some best practices for finding a building and for how to fill it up with interesting events and ideas. [freespace] is kind of the ultimate tactic for inspiring people to develop their civic engagement/civic hacking muscles and we definitely encourage you to look into utilizing this concept in your own community. For a a little more guidance than can be packed into a 30 minute podcast, please consult this toolkit.
