In this episode of Nate Stevens Challenges the Norm, I discuss social norms around what it means to “become” who we are. In the United States, we have a habit of asking young children and babies what they want to be when they grow up with the expectation of the child responding with their current favorite occupation.
I think this question is a reflection of a general sense that we become titles and conform to what the world “needs” without ever really engaging with that idea.
What I think the world needs is more people who are confident about who they are and are contributing to society in a way that only they can.
In this episode I reference The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, which is one of my favorite books of all time.
