Pavel Palazhchenko has been interpreter and close aide for Mikhail Gorbachev since early in Gorbachev's tenure as Soviet leader. Before that, he served as interpreter in the foreign miinistry, especially to Eduard Shevardnadze. He interpreted all the international negotiations in which Gorbachev played such a historic role in ending the Cold War. He remains in close touch with the 91-year--old Gorbachev. who remains in isolation because of the pandemic.
