Talking All Things Cardiopulm

Episode 41: You can be the Ferrari or you can be the Pinto. What it Means to Practice at the top of your license

Listen Later

If you love your job, you won’t work a day in your life. We’ve all heard the quote, but sometimes work is work and your co-workers and your supervisor make (or break) the environment. Employees enjoy being acknowledged for the “small things”, they would like support for their team and be valued for what they bring to the table. These are all things employees desire and Dr. Tina Fields strives to deliver for her unit.

In this episode, Dr. Burriesci chats with Dr. Tina Fields, the Supervisor and Director of Residency at University of Michigan  Health. They burrow in deep on leadership and what that looks like on the “Cards” unit, how she facilitates her staff recognizing one another and empowers them with knowledge from within and adjacent to their scope of practice.

She ventures from her desirable leadership practices to the treatment of Left Ventricular Assistive Device (LVAD) patients and how that can be an incredibly complex dance. She explains that she wants her team to feel confident in the treatment of these patients (and all others), but that she also wants them to practice at the top of their scope. Her team knows what they’re doing, and they should advocate for themselves and their patients. She rounds out the episode by talking about what the University of Michigan’s Cardiovascular and Pulmonary residency looks like and how they set their residents up for success, even if their route ventures from their facility.

Join us for a conversation that not only educates but also ignites a passion for pushing the boundaries of physical therapy.
