What did you learn about yourself last week?
For all the kids coming back from their first semester at college, this message is especially for you.
Often you wonder why your parents are so hard on you when you don’t think they should be, and sometimes the opposite is true where you are too hard on yourself when you really shouldn’t be.
How do we make sense of this?!
Here is a quote from the Danish Philosopher Soren Kierkegaard that will hopefully shed some light on this conundrum.
“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”
We in a constant state of learning about ourselves and the world around us. The older you get the more perspective you have on hardships, good and bad decisions, and missteps along the way.
We all have made mistakes. However, I personally wouldn’t change a thing about my past. All of these moments made me the person I am today.
Life is constantly in flux. At this very moment you are making decisions that are shaping who you are and will ultimately become.
So the important question is what did you learn about yourself? Once you answer that question you can recalibrate, readjust, and continue onward.
Remember that being too hard on yourself for things you cannot change is not productive. Instead, use it as a lesson to propel you forward.
Soren also said, “To dare is to lose one’s footing. Note to dare is to lose oneself.”
Don’t be afraid to take risks, challenge yourself, or make mistakes. But always, always fail forward.
