Episode 43: Stephen Krashen creates a whole population that is functionally illiterate

Listen Later

Today’s podcast argues that Stephen Krashen’s “influential” model of language acquisition, which emphasises incremental, analytical learning, overlooks a significant group of learners known as Gestalt Language Processors (GLPs). GLPs acquire language holistically, through meaningful chunks, and often struggle in traditional educational settings that fail to acknowledge their unique processing style. The author, a GLP themselves, advocates for a more inclusive approach to language education that recognises the diverse ways people learn and uses a Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) model to better understand and support GLPs. Dr. Jaime Hoerricks criticises the limitations of Krashen’s model, particularly its lack of cultural and contextual sensitivity, and argues that incorporating GLP-aware instruction into classrooms and therapeutic environments is crucial for fostering meaningful language development in all learners.
