EXPLORING ART

Episode 435 | To Be Nude or Not to Be"

Listen Later

Joe Brown, a well-known athletic sculptor from Princeton, New Jersey, created a larger-than-life bronze of two gymnasts for Temple University in Philadelphia. The man figure, dressed in clothes with both feet on the pedestal, does a dramatic handstand with the unclothed girl high over his head. In response to feminist objections that the sexes are unequal in his work, Mr. Brown stated that he originally meant both figures to be naked. Still, a naked guy at street level in a city would attract vandals to spray paint or decorate it in other ways, so he added the shorts. In this episode, we will discuss what we think of this statue and its influence on society.
