Do animals really help us and our children? How can animals help us teach our children basic learning skills, life skills, and even how to help build their character? How do animals impact our children’s lives?
"Most notably, animal-assisted intervention research has provided evidence of positive outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), conduct disorder, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, as well as for children in medical settings [for reviews, see Nimer & Lundahl, 2007; O'Haire, 2013]. Meta-analyses of animal-assisted intervention research show a range of benefits, including increased social interaction and communication, as well as reduced stress (cortisol response), severity of ASD symptoms, and aggressive behavior" [Nimer & Lundahl, 2007; O'Haire, 2013].
When children interact with animals, they develop an understanding of responsibility, connection, and empathy.
Animals teach us a lot about ourselves…our emotions…our worries…
Animals are excellent listeners, friends, and teachers. They sure teach us a lot about life.
Animals can also help us when teaching our children skills in reading, writing, math, and science.
To me…raising children with animals helps children to:
-spend more time outside
-develop empathy and compassion
-learn about love and loss
-foster responsibility and leadership skills
-teach kids about sharing, patience, self-control, and unconditional love
You surely don’t have to have animals, chickens or other farm animals like we do…but you can incorporate animals into your home in a way that best suites your family…and I sure hope you do!
