Episode 44: Failure < Determination

Listen Later

December 27, 2021

What are you determined to accomplish?

Yesterday my family and I went to a place called Refreshing Mountain. This is a place in eastern Pennsylvania where you can zip line through Christmas lights, and attempt an obstacle course that is ~50 feet in the air.

When I first thought about this post, I thought about how we can overcome our fears through action. Or maybe, how we should do something every day that scares us a little.

But this post was inspired by my 11 year old daughter, Allison.

You see, my 8 year old son, Dylan, quickly got over his fear of the zip line. But my daughter, she completed the high ropes obstacle course.

I could tell she was extremely scared, and at one point she wanted to give up. The problem is that she was half way through, and there was no turning back.

Her response?

She gritted her teeth and pushed forward without accepting help from the instructor on the last obstacle.

At the end she stood triumphantly on the final platform having conquered her fears, and also having learned a little something about herself in the process.

She later told me it was the scariest thing she has ever done.

I have to admit. Walking on a high wire or jumping from swing to swing more than 50 feet in the air is definitely an experience (even if you are tethered to a rope above to prevent you from falling the entire way down).

When she made it to the final platform, I asked Allie how she was able to push past her fear to get through all the obstacles without falling.

She said, “I was determined to make it, and now I know I can do it.”

That inspired the quote from Og Mandino who said, “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.”

I think in this case you can also substitute “failure” with “fear”.

The lesson here is that the difference between what you perceive to be outside of your own limitations and what is actually possible lies in your own determination.

So finish this year stronger than you started.

And as for next year . . . find what you are determined to accomplish and pursue it unwavering optimism and determination.
