This week, the conversation starts with snow on the way — the kind of weather that makes everyone quietly prepare for the power to go out, whether they admit it or not. With the forecast looming, we talk about family logistics, including my daughter bringing the cat up to Fredericksburg from Richmond for safekeeping, because some places lose electricity faster than others.
AI makes a brief appearance, not in the usual “singularity is coming” way, but in a more human one: how these systems are starting to think about vulnerable users. We talk about the idea of an AI needing guardrails — like how you wouldn’t tell a seven-year-old bluntly that the dog died, but instead steer them back toward their parents. That leads into Anthropic’s “constitutional” framework for Claude, and the growing awareness that these tools have to handle people gently, not just answer questions.
From there, things drift into employment disasters and the surprisingly easy ways people manage to get themselves fired. JD shares a story from his radio days involving a T-shirt that was… not workplace appropriate. We also talk about some of the dumbest things people have ever posted online, including the nurse who thought it was a good idea to twerk in front of an ICU patient — and then upload it.
The theme continues with gross-out internet behavior, including the infamous Burger King employee who put his feet in the salad bin on his way out the door. Which is exactly as disgusting as it sounds.
Then comes the real villain of the episode: Domino’s.
Dan goes on a full coupon-and-gift-card rabbit hole, trying to place a simple order that turns into an infuriating algorithmic trap. Gift cards apply… but only if you pay the remaining balance with another gift card. Coupons don’t work the way they should. The website fights you. The app is worse. Every attempt to get the total under $50 somehow ends up back over $50 again. In the end, the solution is the most human one possible: forget it — Walmart frozen pizzas win.
We also talk about modern tech confusion in public, including the gas station customer who kept tapping her credit card against the screen instead of using the actual chip reader, assuming the LCD would somehow magically scan it. People aren’t reading — they’re just expecting technology to guess what they mean.
We wrap things up with the important cultural news of the week: it’s National Irish Coffee Day, and somehow that alone is enough to fill out an hour.
