Sadako Sasaki was a Japanese girl who developed leukemia after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Inspired by a legend, she began folding 1,000 paper cranes to wish for healing and peace. She died in 1955 at age 12. Her story became a global symbol of hope and a call for nuclear disarmament.
