EXPLORING ART

Episode 453 | Calder’s Issue with Pittsburg

Listen Later

Going back to the 20th century there was a quirky and imaginative artist who brought whimsy and movement to the world of sculpture. He also transformed the traditional static art form into a playful and dynamic experience. This artist was Alexander Calder! He was most famous, particularly for his "Mobile Pittsburgh,".It is a unique expression of his artistic vision and a reflection of the time and place in which it was created. However, this artwork which was originally black and white was painted green and gold when it was donated by a private collector to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. This issue was seen as destroying its historical value since it was made without Calder’s consent.
