EXPLORING ART

Episode 465 | The Color of Pittsburgh

Listen Later

In this episode, we will be discussing Case Study: The Color of Pittsburgh, by Alexander Calder, a Pittsburgh native. The American sculptor grew up as a scrappy engineer with an artist's heart. His masterpiece "Pittsburgh" was the center of discussion for it's controversial repainting. With two sides arguing their relative correctness, we will explore the facts behind the controversial repainting of a sculpture created in the 50s, which was later donated to the Larger Pittsburgh area airport. The debate comes down to the property and intellectual rights of an artist and their dictation in the artwork. The panel will discuss and buttress their arguments in order to answer the questions about artist autonomy and the monetization of artwork. Join us for a discussion on The Color of Pittsburgh.
