Primarily, God's prophets bring warning messages. The nation is told to straighten its path or consequences will follow. Written prophecies also contain good news about the future as well. The messages from God are in that sense mixed, but the first reason for sending a prophet is to extol the nation to repent. Jeremiah warned Jerusalem, but false prophets told them they had nothing to worry about.
