In his farewell discourse to his disciples in the upper room, Jesus talks about the betrayal of Judas, the denial of Peter, the new commandment to love one another, being the way, the truth, and the life, the promise of the Holy Spirit, and being the true vine. Then he talks about the hatred of the world and the sorrow that they will feel when he is gone. He then says in John 16:33, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
