Murder, My Dude

Episode 52 - MLK, My Dude

Listen Later

We normally release our show right at 12AM on Thursday, but as today would be the 91st birthday of the late Martin Luther King Jr., it's fitting to release it now instead.

We start this week's show off with our usual chaotic, comedic spin on true crime podcasting, but then we take a deep, deep look at both the infamous April 4, 1968 assassination of Dr. King, but also a serious attempt on his life a decade prior. We also explore the checkered past and frantic pursuit of the man who pled guilty to the murder: James Earl Ray.

From there, we make a major pivot. Ray recanted his confession three days after and insisted he was set up as a patsy. He found unlikely allies in his claims of innocence: Coretta Scott King and Dexter King, the wife and son of the civil rights icon. We explore the vendetta that the FBI had against King during his lifetime and the alternate theories that exist regarding one of the most heinous killings of the 20th Century.
