On July 12th, a group of American circus performers got into a late-night tavern brawl with members of Toronto’s local fire brigade. The next day, the firemen returned to get revenge. They stormed the S.B. Howes Star Troupe Menagerie and Circus, tearing down tents, injuring performers, and wrecking the grounds. It wasn’t just about clowns and pride — the riot revealed the raw tensions of a city divided by class, religion, and loyalty. The circus didn’t start the fire. It just lit the fuse.
