Episode 55: Be Quick, Don't Hurry

Listen Later

My family and I were on vacation this past week and while my wife was getting ready my eleven-year-old said, "Be quick, don't rush".  I started grinning ear to ear, and we had a conversation about how she tells her friends this at school all the time.

I was grinning because here is my LinkedIn post from exactly two years ago in honor of the NCAA tournament:

"John Wooden was a legendary college basketball coach, and is one of my favorite people to quote (especially to my children). I love this quote from Coach Wooden in particular, “Be quick but don’t hurry.” To me this quote means to be in control. To be in control you need to remove hesitation without making too many mistakes. In order to do this you need to be prepared. Everyone wants things quickly, but you want to be prepared so you can stay in focused and pivot when necessary. Mistakes are unavoidable, but happen more often when we hurry without a plan of action."

When I told my daughter this is a quote use frequently, she got a little defensive.  After all, she is confident this is her quote!

Andy Hill, author of “Be Quick-But Don’t Hurry”,  identified four key pointers to remove hesitation:

  1. Avoid delays.
  2. Avoid maybe.
  3. Move on from mistakes.
  4. Follow your instincts.

Another Wooden quote that frequently gets thrown around my house is, “if you do not have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?” Be prepared so you can quickly complete your task or achieve your goals the first time. That is how you can be quick without hurrying.
