Simon pushed the door and stepped into the cold walkway and clocked in his presence on a handheld device. The machine gave an audible ‘beep’ and he moved in, pulling his jacket close. 

There was no one at the counter but he knew they were one or two people inside the staff room, quietly attending to routine matters.

He walked straight along the corridor, his footsteps echoing hollowly in his ears. The corridor was not as brightly lit as the main entrance where the counter was, but Simon was not afraid. 

His proud bearing of a world, weary soldier did not deter him from entertaining imaginary thoughts of ghosts and supernatural beings.
