Episode 56: Interview with Marcus the CCI
In this episode, Joshua talks with Marcus White, the summer Challenge Course Instructor of 2026. They talk about Marcus's years at camp, how camp has impacted him, and their favorite camp traditions. Marcus also talks about some things he hopes to convey to the staff, campers, and parents this summer!
Hello! My name is Marcus White, and I am from Whitesboro, New York. I am 22 years old, and this summer I will serve as the Challenge Course Instructor (CCI) at Beaver Camp. This will be my sixth summer working at Beaver Camp. In previous summers, I served as a Kitchen Aide (2021-22), Camp Counselor (2023-24), and Assistant Program Director (2025). I am currently enrolled at Houghton University, where I am dual-majoring in Inclusive Adolescence Education and History. This fall, I will begin my student teaching in Lewis County before returning to Houghton in the spring to finish my degree. Outside of camp and school, I enjoy playing the piano, painting, and spending time with friends and family.
Every time I think of Beaver Camp, I am reminded of God’s faithfulness. To this day, I thank God for putting camp on my path, as it has shaped me into the man I am today. I was 18 when I accepted Christ into my heart on the back deck of Balsam, and since then, I have been striving to honor and glorify God in all I do.
This past year, I have had the opportunity to take a deep dive into several passages of the Bible at school and in my personal devotions. The passage I have enjoyed studying the most comes from the Gospel of John. John 21:1-19 shows that, despite our failings and shortcomings, Jesus, with his unconditional love and forgiveness, will always be there to welcome us back with open arms.
I plan to incorporate my previous summers of experience and knowledge to help make the Challenge Course a place where campers can be and feel safe while also challenging them to grow as they step out of their comfort zone to try new things or conquer previously held fears. I look forward to serving as the CCI this summer. To whoever reads this, I hope you are just as excited for the summer as I am, and I will see you at check-in!
