This week I talk with Leah DeKalb. Leah grew up in Northern California, where she was always immersed in something active: riding horses, playing soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, volleyball, track, skiing, you name it! Maintaining an active lifestyle is a part of who she is at her core. Running has always been her go-to sport to stay in shape, both mentally and physically. In 2014 she completed her first half-marathon, and in 2015, her first full marathon. She continued to love running but always sought more ways to stay active.
After watching her husband compete in a handful of triathlons, she thought, “I’d like to do that, but just the thought of it scares the daylights out of me!” She worked with her husband to learn how to swim (she could not swim a full length of the pool when she first started!), gained confidence on the bike, and took the plunge into her first Sprint Triathlon in 2018. Since then, she has continued to race in many local sprints and has qualified and raced the Olympic distance at Age Group Nationals two times. Leah took the plunge to “tri” out her first 70.3 in Waco, TX this past October. This year she has thoroughly enjoyed being a member of Team Varlo and the Elite Feed Athlete Team.
When she’s not training or racing, Leah is working on finishing up her Master’s degree in Business Management and working as a Graduate Assistant. She also loves spending time with her dog, Woodford, and husband of four years, Jeff. She looks forward to continuing to push past her limits to achieve more than she ever dreamed possible in the sport of triathlon and hopes to inspire others to do the same!
