Episode 56: The Joy Within

Listen Later

To state the obvious, there is a lot going on in the world today. Pandemics, war, and other human conflict.

Unlike most other videos you will watch this week, month, and year, I will not be making a statement on any of these events. Instead, I will simply leave you with this quote from Joseph Campbell, “We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy.”

Not to sound cliche, but … happiness doesn’t come to you, it comes from you.

True peace can only come if you are unaffected by outside events.

As humans we always looking outside, literally. That is how we are designed. But to find joy we must turn inwards.

There is an African Proverb that I quote all the time that says “If there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do us no harm.”

You are the biggest obstacle to happiness. You are the biggest challenge in your life. Everyone wants to have control of their situation, but it isn’t until you realize that you cannot control outside events that you can begin to find peace.

Who are you surrounding yourself with? People that raise you up, or tear you down? Don’t listen to the haters. The people that want to go through life without energy or passion. The online trolls.

If you let them affect your attitude, your mental state, then they are enslaving you (if only for a second). You are giving them power.

It’s time to take the power back. Everything starts in your mind. Everything begins and ends with you. Are you happy with your work? Are you happy with what you got accomplished today? Are you grateful for the things around you?

The answer needs to be a resounding “yes” to all these things because these are the things you can control.

Stop looking for happiness on the outside and turn inward. Don’t wait for it to happen. Make it happen.
