Episode 57: Respect is Earned

Listen Later

I read Trillion Dollar Coach while I was on vacation earlier this month.  The book is about Bill Campbell, who was on of the most influential people in Silicon Valley.  One of Bill Campbell’s mantras really stuck with me.  It was some advice he received while he was CEO of Claris from Donna Dubinsky who said, “Your title makes you a manager; your people make you a leader.”

We all know people that demand respect, but have not earned it.  If you want people to respect you then you must have empathy, project humility and selflessness to show that you care about the company, people, and culture.

Managing is all about the people that work for you.  They are the foundation of a successful company, and it is the responsibility of management to help people be more effective in their job so they can grow and develop (both in and out of the workplace).

Managers create an environment that amplifies the energy that employees come to work with through support, respect, and trust.

Leaders trust people and enable them to do their jobs and make decisions.  They believe in their teams ability.

Great leaders gain respect through understanding each individual’s unique career goals while being sensitive to their life choices.

The bottom line is that people are always the greatest asset of any company.  If you want their respect, it must be earned.
