Secret #4: The New Opportunity
On 23 October, 2001, Steve Jobs unveiled the iPod. It’s not any MP3 player, it’s not a walkman, it’s a music player completely redesigned. With the iPod, you can carry a thousand songs in your pocket with you anywhere. The audience never heard of anything like it before, and they went nuts over it. 6 years later in 2007, Steve Jobs created another new opportunity for his dream customers. They completely reworked, redesigned and rethought the concept of a phone, and packed it with so much advanced technology that this phone only had 1 main button. Everything was done via touchscreen. It was insane. It was overwhelming. It was revolutionary. It was the iPhone. A few years later, Apple would do the same for the iPad in 2012, the Apple Watch in 2015, and the AirPods in 2016.
Jobs knew his customers didn’t want a better CD player, or a better phone. They wanted something new, so he created it for them. In the words of Henry Ford, “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”
Our goal is not to fix what’s not working. Our goal is to replace what’s not working with something altogether different. Don’t build a better mouse trap. Get your customers to adopt a cat and open a veterinary clinic.
When you create your own category and offer your followers a new opportunity this gives you the chance to become the category king and have the biggest impact on peoples lives.
There are 4 reasons why people don’t want a better mousetrap, or improvement offers.
There are 4 reasons why people love new opportunities.
So how do you create a new opportunity?
Step 1: ask yourself, what is the dream result your customers are trying to achieve?
Step 2: What is the vehicle they are currently using to try to get to the dream result, but are unsuccessful in doing so?
Step 3: Where is the opportunity switch?
