Episode 59: Embracing Working Parenthood w/ Danielle Pickens

Listen Later

Danielle Pickens is a mom of three, an avid Pelotoner, and a coach and consultant for individuals and organizations who want to use their time and talents more effectively. She is the Founder and CEO of The Working Parent's Guide, through which she helps working parents navigate and balance life and work. Before becoming a mom, she followed a conventional career path, asking few questions. But after the birth of her first child, she realized she wanted to do things differently. She’s part of a growing number of working parents recognizing that doing more doesn't always mean we’re doing better. On the contrary, she embraces a mantra of doing less and cutting down on the activities that eat up time but bring little joy.

Highlights:

  • She pioneered a part-time schedule (3-day work) at a government job and had proven herself to be more effective and productive compared to the conventional (5-day) work norm.
  • Despite her exemplary efficiency, she remained underpaid and undervalued. When she was told she wouldn’t get promoted unless she worked full time again, she decided to change paths.
  •  To take a hard right into something new, she encourages working parents to expand their network and make connections with people from different and independent spaces and learn from them; small, imperfect steps in the direction you want to go can make a big difference.
  •  Do not fear taking those first and little imperfect steps; what some consider a failure is simply data for learning.
  •  Work-life balance is not a one-time event; it needs constant re-evaluation and readjustments.

The pandemic has given many of us the opportunity to show up and perform even better while working remotely. The work-from-home mode has allowed working parents to keep their jobs and to be more present for their families. If anything, it has incidentally filled many relationship gaps that the pre-Covid era failed to do.

Called the "Adults' Guidance Counselor" by her friends, Danielle's experiences and expertise might be the help that you need in order to take your life, parenting, and relationships to the next level.
Most interestingly, she empowers working parents to achieve that by focusing on what matters most – and putting their own needs at the top of their to-do lists.
