After I wrote this I discovered HST rode the Ferdinand Magellan back to Independence, Mo.
“On Friday Morning September 17, the campaign began in earnest — and bestowed upon its protagonist a nickname.‘Good luck — and mow’ed down’ Alban Barkley advise Truman as the Ferdinand Magellan prepared to depart Washington’s Union Station ‘I’m going to fight hard’ Harry responded ‘and I’m going to give ‘em hell!’
