Today's guest is Georgie Demir. At 13 years old, in 2017, she founded Arkoun, a small non-profit organisation devoted to manufacturing specially designed soaps. The entirety of the profits are used to help build wash houses in Cambodia.
Facts
Georgie is 14 years old as of May 2018
She's based in Ocean Grove, Victoria, Australia
In 2017, on her own initiative, and after some risky experimenting (almost blowing up a microwave oven) Georgie created her own line of hand-made, especially designed soap.
100% of the proceeds of the soap sales go straight to the construction of wash houses for schools in poor areas of Cambodia, where hygiene is a real issue
The Arkoun project got nominated and made it to the semi-finals of the 2018 Victorian Young Achiever Awards
Her dyslexia condition isn't an obstacle in developing a business and effectively helping hundreds of Cambodian kids in need
Quotes
"Coming back from a third world country to Australia, you don't really see people suffering on the side of the road, or stuff that you would see in a third world country. And that really impacted me. And I thought we could actually help in Cambodia. So, hygiene is a really big issue."
"Give it a go. Help others in need. No one became poor by giving."
"Live every day like it's your last day. Love yourself. Don't change. Don't listen to other people what they have to say about you."
