In the 17th century, long before anaesthesia and antiseptics, King Louis XIV of France pulled down his breeches and underwent surgery on a painful anal fistula. The surgery was a success and elevated surgeons in the minds of the French people and beyond.
It became fashionable in court to sport a bum abscess operation and even a song, still famous the world over today, became popular to commemorate the cutting of the KIng's rear end.
