Today's episode covers our favorite dog sport to date: agility! Our passion, our obsession, our favorite thing to spend evenings and weekends doing! We will tell you all about the sport, what it is, how to get involved in it, and what skills your dog might need in order to participate in it.
Here are some notes from our discussion during the show:
A great online resource for at-home training is to enroll in the Agility Challenge. Whitney and Elissa both participate in this training group and there is a TON to learn! Check it out by clicking here.
You can learn about a wide variety of dog sports and enroll in individual topics at Fenzi Dog Sports Academy! An awesome resource, they cover everything from basic dog behavior, to trick training, to advanced sport classes, including agility.
Remember our recent podcast guest, Liz Randall? Her training has gone virtual! If you're local to her area, she also offer classes in person. Check out Dogs Abound for more!
There are a whole lot of sanctioning organizations for the sport of dog agility. Below are the main organizations. Click on any of them to be redirected to their websites:
AKC - The American Kennel Club
USDAA - United States Dog Agility Association
UKI - UK Agility International
IFCS - International Federation of Cynological Sports
ASCA - The Australian Shepherd Club of America
CPE - Canine Performance Events
FCI - Federation Cynologique Internationale
Do you want to know more about how to decide which treats your dog likes best? There are a variety of ways to determine this, but we'll walk to you through something Elissa does to help determine what works the best. Check out this YouTube video of Elissa and her dog Lincoln on their 'taste testing' endeavor!
Have you ever wondered what types of equipment we use for training our dogs on foundations and fitness work? Truthfully, you can find objects around your house that will work. Or, you can spend some bucks and invest in true 'canine' equipment. Check out our website at www.caninehighjinks.com for some photos of typical equipment.
