The book of Genesis is unique for several reasons.
1. It tells of events that no human witnessed.
2. Genesis records the origins of all things.
3. Genesis gives us our first impressions of God.
4. Genesis covers more time than the rest of the Bible.
5. And this is just my opinion, but I believe Genesis to be the most indispensable book in the OT.
Genesis plays an important part in our understanding, interpreting and applying the NT.
As a book, Genesis has 50 chapters and most scholars and commentators divide it further into 2 main sections.
I want to give you some specific tips for reading Genesis.
1. Pay attention to major and minor themes in the book.
2. The phrase “these are the generations of” is important to the structure of Genesis.
3. Take notice of several “asides” by the narrator.
4. Note recurring phrases in the text and highlight them in some way.
5. As always when you study Scripture, keep a small journal of what you learn while reading.
