Episode 6: Margaret Skinnider

Listen Later

"School-teacher turned sniper!" Join hosts Alana Daly Mulligan and Niamh Browne, along with Dr. Mary McAuliffe, as they explore the remarkable life of Margaret Skinnider, the youngest of the Irish revolutionary women they’ve discussed. A proud member of Cumann na mBan, Margaret was the only female combatant wounded in action, having been shot three times on April 27th while attempting to set fire to buildings on Harcourt Street to block the retreat of British soldiers who had positioned a machine gun on the roof of the University Church. Known for empowering women through gun skills, she also tested dynamite alongside fellow revolutionary Madeleine ffrench-Mullen. Margaret was queer and shared a partnership with Nora Connolly, making a significant impact in the fight for Irish independence 🌈✨. This episode features recordings from Harcourt Street, highlighting her incredible journey!
