I Am Perfectly Frank

EPISODE 6: OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR CHILDREN

Listen Later

In this episode we extracted audio that came organically from a conversation while Frankie, Cheri and Rachel were recording Chapter 3 of Frankie's book "The Man, He's Stupid, And The Girl, She's So Bitch: Relationship Wisdom from My Chaldean Mother." Rachel read this portion of the book: "We carry over some of our behaviors from our family of origin into our relationships as well. For me and my family, I’m okay calling me out like, “Mom, don’t yell.” You know, “Mom, calm down.” I'm okay with that." Rachel then asked Frankie to expand the topic a bit with the question "Is it okay to tell my kids 'You control my reaction'?" and a whole discussion was sparked about controlling our reactions with our kids and spouses. Frankie gives great advice on how to speak to your kids and spouses by not putting them down or speaking to them in anger. When we yell it doesn't feel good to our kids or spouse but it doesn't feel good to US either! "Our job is to show our kids how to do this thing called life," Frankie explained. Cheri went on to say we can walk away when we are angry at our kids or spouse because it gives us a minute to calm down and rethink how to approach the situation. Frankie suggests we find a new path besides always telling our kids "no" when they are growing up because we are saying it in fear and should be letting them explore.
