We did our best to explain the movie, but Smokey was hell bent on letting everyone know it was 3 hours of misery.


Yi Yi was universally acclaimed by critics and is often cited as one of the best films of the 21st century. It won Best Director at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and holds near-perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.


Directed by Edward Yang, Yi Yi (which translates to A One and a Two…) is aTaiwanese family drama that follows three generations of the Jian family in Taipei over the course of a year. The story begins with a wedding and ends with a funeral, reflecting the cycles of life. The film explores the quiet struggles of everyday existence through three main perspectives: NJ, a weary father facing ethical dilemmas at work and regrets from the past; Min-Min, his wife, who feels spiritually lost; and their children, Ting-Ting, a shy teenager discovering love, and Yang-Yang, a curious young boy trying to understand the world through his camera lens.
