Silence can be thought of excluding noise. When we think about this in terms of our own emotions, or maybe “getting space” or whatever it is - silence can have a lot of positive meanings.
When I think of what I have to do to be silent, or to create spaces of silence in my life, I have to do just that: Make particular spaces that support that. That means that in my mind I will begin to divide times of silence and times of sound (so to speak).
When we set these rules up in our lives, we see the benefits and sometimes want to share our views of the world. And, this can often times lead to creating standards that we then begin to think ought to be applied to all, and after time the assumptions begin to take the shape in terms of views of human nature.
My view is that we can learn a lot from silence. But, when silence is used as a weapon and speaking up is only allowed in certain spaces that are controlled by the dominant power, then we need to reevaluate our views on keeping silent.
