Twins struggle in Rebekah's womb. "Two nations are in your womb." Esau comes out red and hairy; Jacob comes out grasping Esau's heel. Years later, Esau returns from the field famished. Jacob is cooking lentil stew. "Let me eat some of that red stew." Jacob demands the birthright in exchange. Esau says, "I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?" And he sells it for a single meal. "Thus Esau despised his birthright." The eternal traded for the immediate. The spiritual for the physical. This is what it looks like when you value the wrong things.
