Episode 63 - Freedom Summer Of 1964 And Voting Rights In The American South

Listen Later

Freedom Summer was a voting rights movement that happened in Mississippi in the summer of 1964. What makes Freedom Summer so important? Freedom Summer really brought the plight of Black Americans to the front of the national conversation at that time. Three men were murdered by the KKK during Freedom Summer, simply because they were helping Black residents of Mississippi attempt to register to vote, among other things. This episode also covers, in a very condenssed way, the history of the rights of Black citizens of the United States to vote, from the end of the Civil War until current times (2020). Voter supression has been an issue for Black Americans for so long and continues to this day. Let’s talk about it, think of ways we can fix this and VOTE the bastards that maintain voter suppression OUT! Music in this episode by Charles Bradley and The BellRays.
