In this episode, I talk with the Director of Sports Performance & Nutrition for Mesquite ISD, Blake Cundiff. Coach Cundiff and I had the pleasure of working together when he and I both joined Mesquite ISD in 2016. Prior to coming to Mesquite ISD, Coach Cundiff spent several seasons as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Texas State football team. During his 22-year career in the strength and conditioning field, Cundiff has trained a wide variety of athletes ranging from high school football, baseball, and hockey players to NFL, NHL and MLB stars such as Pro Football Hall of Fame members Troy Aikman, Larry Allen, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, and Emmitt Smith. He also trained NHL All-Star Brett Hull. Cundiff joined Texas State’s staff after serving as the strength and conditioning coach at Albany from 2008-April 2011, where he worked with the football and basketball teams, and serving as the executive sports performance director at Velocity Sports Performance in Missouri City, Texas from Mar. 2007-July 2008. He also was an associate director of strength and conditioning at Minnesota, where he was involved with all aspects of the Golden Gopher football strength program from 2005-07. Prior to his stint at Minnesota, Cundiff was an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 1997-2000. Dallas advanced to the playoffs twice during his tenure. Before coaching in the NFL, Cundiff spent four years as an assistant strength coach at North Texas from 1993-97, and was the head strength coach for the Grapevine High School football program for two years. His experience also includes being the owner and director of Prostar Sports Performance. In addition, he served as the strength coach for the 1994 and 1995 Emmitt Smith Football Camps, and as the director of strength and conditioning for the 1995 Dallas Stars Junior Hockey Camp. He also was a speed, strength, and conditioning consultant for the Dallas Stars. A Texas native, Cundiff is a member of the NHSCA, earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise physiology and injury rehabilitation at North Texas in 1995. He also received an associate’s degree in business management at Mountain View College. Coach Cundiff and I talk about the S&C industry pretty in-depth! Enjoy today’s episode!
