Talking All Things Cardiopulm

Episode 63: What you did not know about RPE...

Listen Later

Are you familiar with the RPE scale? Do you have a preference on the 6-20 or 0-10 scale? Have you utilized this scale in your practice or teaching? Me too! And yes I 100% have a preference.

But did you know that this scale has been around since the 1960s and was created by Dr. Gunnar Borg and later updated with his daughter? Have you ever checked the original reference of the Borg scale you use? Is it in color? What words are assigned to the numbers? What instructions are given for use?

If you’re curious, join me in this episode while you watch me actively synthesize the rabbit hole I jumped in and more importantly learn the intent behind these well-validated scales!

 In this episode:

  • Evolution of the Borg RPE scale
  • The intent behind the 6-20 RPE scale and CR-10 scale
  • Discuss instructions for each scale
  • Importance of utilizing the original scale
