Towards the end of his life, Joshua, appointed by God to lead his people into the Promised Land, gathered all the tribes of Israel together and said these words to them: “Choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)

 

The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua and the elders who outlived him, but after that generation passed away, the new generation turned to the worship of other gods and abandoned the ways of their ancestors. It is in response to broken promises, that God raises up judges.
