Jacob wants to leave. Laban wants him to stay—"I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you." They negotiate wages: Jacob will take only the spotted, speckled, and striped animals. Laban agrees, then immediately removes all such animals. But Jacob out-maneuvers him with selective breeding. The flocks multiply in Jacob's favor. The deceiver defeats the deceiver. Twenty years of service, and Jacob has finally gotten the upper hand. But it's time to go home. The promised land is waiting. And so is Esau.
