Krista speaks with poet and storyteller Luka Lesson about his poetry, his activism, and his inspiration. Luka provides insights into his writing process and describes the role that critical thinking plays in the creation of his poetry. As an Australian of Greek descent, he talks about how his work is influenced by the epic poems and rich mythology of Ancient Greece and how poetry enables him to connect with himself and the wider community. Luka believes that the best poetry comes from a vulnerable and uncomfortable place and he explains how his skills and experience as a performance poet help him to help others find their voice and express themselves through the spoken and written word. He is currently working on a hip-hop version of Homer’s Odyssey, which will be performed in English and Greek, and was influenced by Krista’s favorite musical, Hamilton.
Prior to the outbreak of Covid, Luka traveled the world performing his poetry, running educational workshops, and offering poetry retreats in his ancestral village on the Greek island of Rhodes. Now, for the first time, he has created an online course, Spoken Word Poetry 101: Amplify Your Voice, which starts on the 9th of January.
