Images of Ken Schrader waving for safety crews to come to Dale Earnhardt’s aid after their accident at the end of the 2001 Daytona 500 were the first indication that something was wrong. As the minutes passed, the sense of dread got stronger and stronger. Finally, NASCAR President Mike Helton stepped to a podium and confirmed the worst .. we’d lost Dale Earnhardt.
