Episode 7: Ohio v. Unemployment (Coxey's Army)

Listen Later

Episode 7: “Ohio v. Unemployment” (Coxey’s Army) Alex sits down with author Jerry Prout, political science professor at Marquette University, to discuss the first march on Washington by Coxey’s Army in 1894. Sparked by the economic depression, the Panic of 1893, Jacob Coxey and his army of unemployed men march from Massillon, Ohio to DC. We analyze why Coxey’s March for Jobs catches the nation’s imagination and serves to humanize a downtrodden group of Americans, the unemployed. We use Jerry Prout’s book, Coxey’s Cruade for Jobs: Unemployment in the Gilded Age (https://www.amazon.com/Coxeys-Crusade-Jobs-Unemployment-Gilded/dp/0875804985) as a guide to this historic walk and its violent end on the US Capitol lawn. Learn about the famous World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 and why Coxey’s Army is considered by some to be the basis for the Wizard of Oz. Welcome to our new sponsor: goBus!
