I'll admit it: I'm almost 17 years into this yearbook journey, and I still struggle with timely, authentic, meaningful assessment of my staff and their work. It's easy for me to get consumed by the pace, the deadlines, the 48 students each moving in a different direction on a given day and lose sight of anything resembling good assessment practices of my students and their work.
Today, at the National High School Journalism Convention in San Francisco, I was able to sit down with my good friend Annie Gorenstein-Falkenberg, adviser of the Priam yearbook at Longmont (Colo.) HS, for a great chat about reflective assessment and grading. If you're anything like me and struggle with grading in the publications lab, you'll want to give it a listen!
If you have questions or comments about the episode, assessment, or about yearbooks and the podcast in general, please be in touch at [email protected] — it'd be great to hear from you. Too, you can reach Annie at [email protected].
