A 2019 study on mental health in nursing found that one in three Canadian nurses screen positive for Major Depressive Disorder. More than one in four were positive for Generalized Anxiety Disorder and clinical burnout. Many were positive for PTSD and Panic Disorder. And too many reported having suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts.
Flash forward to 2021: one year into the COVID-19 pandemic. How do you think these numbers stack up?
In today's episode, we are joined by Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Sabrina Jaffer and Registered Nurse (RN), Lina Thompson, to discuss what's happening with the mental health of nurses (spoiler: it's not good). We discuss the politics of nursing, the anxiety of the unknown, the desire to stay human in the face of unfathomable challenge and what we must do to support our frontline workers now and always.
Thank you Sabrina and Lina for bringing this difficult conversation to the table with us.
